Hey again. I forgot to say that I would be using Lucidpress to make my magazine. The program was recommended to me. I am almost finished with my cover page I just need to insert some coverlines and decide what colors to use on some of the fonts. Here is a picture.

I also added some detail like the little bar code and a dateline.

I've decided that the title of the magazine will be Food World. So now I chose some recipes. I chose a shrimp recipe and a meat recipe to go in my double page spread. Today I made some of these recipes and I've begun taking pictures. I'm having trouble finding a good background for the pictures.  The other difficult part is making the pictures look sharp like in most food magazines. I am also working on my table of contents right now. For my cover page I will use the best picture I take.

The bibliography for the recipes are located below:

I've been having a hard time trying to figure out the name for my magazine. It's hard to grab something that hasn't already been taken.I'm trying to find something that would have my initials but that hasn't worked out.

So my magazine will be a magazine for all types of food but this edition that will be made will be mostly about mexican food. It will be mexican food because I am from Mexico and it would be easier for me to find help making the different dishes.

So I was thinking that since my magazines would be about all types of foods but would be separated into different countries by edition I would like to name the magazine something like "Food World" or "World of Food".

For myTable of contents idea

What I basically want to do is put the page numbers around pictures of kitchen utensils and dishes. So  I could basically arrange a picture  with many different utensils and take a picture. I could also paint and or draw the kitchen things.

If I decide to draw and paint I would decide to go for a look like the one in the picture below.

For the last couple of days I've been looking at food magazine to get ideas for my double page spread.  I decided to do use 2 long pictures for both pages. Those pictures are gonna be located at the top and are gonna fill the top half of both pages. The first page will have one recipe and the second will have the second recipe. The picture will have two dishes. The sides of the pages may have some pictures of the ingredients. I will figure out the color scheme of my magazine later after I take pictures of my food., so I can see why goes with the pictures best.

I  researched some tips to write food  articles

Writing food is writing about eating. So try to capture the joy of what it is to eat an amazing meal

You should avoid generic terms like delicious and use words like smooth, buttery.
Food writing should focus on the senses

Don't just tell people steps to  make a recipe but try to tell them what happens and explain as much as possible

Show a recipe through personal experiences. Because people will usually relate

Make  yourself sound like a food expert.

I need to really define my target audience in order to know who to aim the content of my magazine to .The target audience are people over 30. They are usually aimed to people that are settled and have families but in general food lovers.

Recipes are a big part of food magazines

If writing a recipe it is recommended to include visual clues and have standard measuring tools. It is also important to be very thorough in the explanations because not everyone is an expert. Also break down the recipe into components and write down the recipe almost immediately after testing it. List everything in the order it is used . Explain anything extra that can make it easier to make the food.

Tips

-To make food look better you can add a little bit of oil.

-Get the freshest ingredients

-Add a human element  ex: a hand

-Don´t cook the food completely even if it isn't done. Food might look more plump and juicy.

APPS

Hipstamatic is a good app to use for food specially with the new foodie snap pak

Snapdish specializes in food photography

Afterlight is a good photo editing app but it costs money.

Camera360 is very similar to afterlight

Snapseed is powered by google and it is apparently one of the best programs for editing

Moldiv allows to make collages  magazine style

Here´s some more research about food pictures.

1.Try not to use flash.
2.If it gets a little messy by accident it's okay just embrace it.
3.If taking pictures of fruits or vegetables you should maybe spray it with water.

Natural lighting is good
Don't use the kitchen lights.
If using artificial lights get a reflector.
Use white objects.

I have an Iphone and will probably use it to take the pictures of the food so I did some research.

1.Take control of the shadows: this basically means that if you want shadows you should want them to enhance the image and make the image more interesting.

2.Choose a background: make sure that the background doesn't take away attention from the food.

3. Arrange the food nicely

4. Leave some negative space: it will give more emphasis to the food.

Maybe even create a story with the picture.

History is out the window because I have to take all the pictures myself and for a history magazine that would be kinda impossible. I  decided to do a food magazine. My whole family is from Mexico and  it would be easy for me to make mexican food . My target audience would be food lovers of any age. I have yet to decide the content of the magazine. I think I would like to have something about eating healthy and easy recipes.

Today I began working on my portfolio project.  So I chose the magazine project and for my first decision I have to choose what my magazine will be about. And that´s where I run into my first problem. I do know that I don't want to make something fictional. Science is my first choice but I would also be interested in sports and history and food.  Sports would be great because that´s basically what I read about and see all day and I know the science and history topics would take extensive research. Food is tough because it will be hard to photograph and make. The biggest struggle is basically choosing a genre that I won't regret later in the project and one that will keep me interested. For my second post I will talk about my research about the  genre that I am interested in and maybe even my choice.
